Masters of the Universe Panrico Dunkin mini figures from Spain

$

In the 1970s and 1980s, there were all sorts of excellent mini figures released as premiums with food in Spain and Portugal. One of my favorites is the Matutano Monstruos set which I previously covered here. I recently completed another of these sets, and it's an amazing one that I'm incredibly excited about--Masters of the Universe!

You can even fit He-Man & Skeletor on top of their beasts!
These figures were released in the mid-'80s, when MOTU was initially popular, and as far as I've been able to find out were available in the aforementioned countries as prizes with snack cakes (don't you wish you could find MOTU minis packed in with your snack cakes these days?). They are always associated with the names "Panrico" and "Dunkin." From a Google search, it seems Panrico is a major, long-running Spanish company that produces bread, donuts and other pastries. I'm not quite sure how Dunkin factors in.

The figures are smaller than typical mini figures like MUSCLE or Monster in My Pocket, but very nicely detailed for their size. They are made of a light, hard plastic and come in many different colors. As shown above, the colors I'm aware of are red, yellow, flesh, orange, dark green, light green, dark blue, and light blue. I'm not sure if there are any others.

A full set consists of 20 different sculpts. The lineup includes two different sculpts each of He-Man and Skeletor, as well as Man-e-Faces, Beast Man, Mer-Man, Tri-Klops, Castle Grayskull, Battle Cat, Teela, Stratos, Ram-Man, Man-at-Arms, Fisto, Mekaneck, Zodac, Evil-Lyn, Trap Jaw, and Panthor.

Let's take a closer look at some of the figures...

Here's a bunch of the good guys. How fan-frickin'-tastic is that little Castle Grayskull? I think it's actually my favorite figure of the set.

And now some of the baddies. I really dig Beast Man and Trap Jaw and was happy to get them in these particular colors.

This photo shows how the Dunkin figures compare to other MOTU minis, including the newly-released MOTUSCLE figures from Super7 and the '80s vending machine bootlegs, with each set's take on Mer-Man serving as the models. How great is it that at least three different Mer-Man mini figures exist in the world?

And there we have the Panrico Dunkin MOTU minis. I was thrilled to not only find out that these were made, but to also be able to track down a set. I love 'em.

What do you think of them?

Big Bucket of Monsters / Zombies (SCS Direct)

These mini figure sets came out earlier this year, but with Halloween approaching I thought now was the perfect time to feature them.

There are two different sets here--one is called "Big Bucket of Monsters" and the other is "Big Bucket of Zombies." Both sets come in long, clear plastic tubes containing 100 figures each. They are sold by SCS Direct through Amazon here (Monsters) and here (Zombies).

All of the figures are made of hard plastic, and most of them measure around 2 inches tall.

I was most excited about the monster set, because we've seen plenty of monochromatic "army men"-style zombie figures in recent years, but not so many monsters. Plus, the creators chose some unusual creatures to include. Not only do we have old stand-bys like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Mummy, we've also got pretty random additions like Godzilla, Mothra, a cyclops, and a giant spider. In addition to those, the monster set includes a zombie, a demon, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a RIP gravestone, and another grave with a wooden cross and monster hand sticking out of the ground. That makes 13 different sculpts.

Each monster comes in two different colors--dark gray and light gray. I wish they would have chosen more exciting colors, but maybe they were going for a vintage black-and-white monster movie feel. There's so many different color possibilities if these get reissued. How about an orange and black set for next Halloween?

The sculpts are really nice, for the most part. Mothra seems too small--more like a baby Mothra. The Mummy is in some sort of odd running pose. Other than that, we've got some real winners here. My favorites are Godzilla (great texture), the suitably evil-looking winged demon, and the cyclops, which--along with the demon--would also make a great addition to a fantasy setup.

The Universal Monsters sculpts
Unlikely monster pals: Demon, Godzilla, Cyclops and Mothra

The zombies are not quite as unusual or exciting, but they are among the best sets of toy solider-type zombie minis that I've seen. The set stands out from others because it includes some unique and inspired sculpts, like a zombie dog and zombie cat, and a zombie crawling out of the ground.

There are a total of 17 different sculpts in the Big Bucket of Zombies, including a mix of zombies, scared victims, and as with the monster set, a couple of tombstones. There are two different versions of this set available--one with green glow-in-the-dark figures and one with the same light and dark gray colors as the monster set. I chose glow-in-the-dark. They look great, but the downside is that details of the sculpts are harder to make out.

My personal favorites are the gnarly dog and cat!

And here's a close-up of a few more figures from the set. Gotta love the dude with an axe stuck in his noggin.

All in all, really cool sets. I'd say the monsters are a must-buy, and the zombies are also well worth owning if you're a zombie nut. According to the Fantasy Toy Soliders blog, there's rumblings of a fantasy-themed set in the works from this company. Bring it on!

Have any of you guys picked up these sets yet? What's your take?

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: MUSCLE flesh figures & red Goliath

$

The Mystical Warriors of the Ring toy line turns 3 years old this month! MWOTR releases have been coming out steadily since the line's debut, and this fall brings some new colors of PVC figures to add to the roster.

First is the popular Glyos-compatible, articulated Goliath sculpt in red--"Blood Red Metal," to be exact. This metallic red is an extremely attractive color that really suits the character well. It's currently available for $6 through the MWOTR online store.

In celebration of the third anniversary, we're also seeing Series 1, Series 2 and Goliath re-released in the most classic color for "little rubber guys"--MUSCLE flesh/pink! That's a total of 7 PVC figures coming in this color, with Series 1 and 2 consisting of 3 figures each and Goliath packaged by himself. You might remember that the Series 1 three-pack was released in flesh in 2013, but it wasn't that close of a match to MUSCLE flesh. The new release is much more in line with that classic mini figure color so many collectors love.

These will debut at Designer Con later this month, with remaining stock to be added to the online store after the show.

Series 2 in MUSCLE flesh

Original 2013 flesh, new MUSCLE flesh, & MUSCLE figure for comparison

As always, keep an eye on the MWOTR website for more updates.

Mysteries of the Universe: UFO playsets, Mighty Max-style

Mighty Max micro playsets were some of the most popular toys of the early-to-mid 1990s, which of course resulted in plenty of rip-offs. One of the coolest releases that took advantage of the Mighty Max concept was a small line from 1996 titled Mysteries of the Universe, which consisted of three different compact UFOs that fit in the palm of your hand and contained micro visitors from outer space.

These were manufactured by Uni-King Toys of China, and I believe distributed mainly to discount stores. That's where I remember getting mine--probably for a couple bucks.

There's a black ship, a green ship and a blue ship, each with a different design and each including different micro aliens and other accessories. To add to the coolness, all of the sets include items found on Earth that have been associated with extraterrestrials, such as pyramids, a Moai, a Dogū, and Nazca Lines.

I own only the shiny green UFO, which comes with the classic alien greys, plus the awesome little Moai and Dogū statues, and a couple machine-type accessories. All four aliens have a different sculpt, which is a nice touch.

When you open up the ship, you see a few more aliens lying in pods, either sleeping or being experimented upon. So cool!

Considering these were dollar store types of toys, the fun factor and level of detail are fantastic. Whoever designed them clearly put a good amount of research, thought and effort into them. I like the one I own so much that I've been tempted to track down the others.

You can find a detailed review of one of the additional two UFOs over at Dinosaur Dracula.

Who else has any of these or remembers them?

Universe of Violence Chaos Dimension: Wave 2

UoV magnet & character cards
Universe of Violence is back! The last we heard from this long-running indie toy line was in 2014, with the release of the fantastic Satyrant and Venus Maneater figures. Now, we've got three brand new brutes to add to the gang via UoV Chaos Dimension Wave 2.

Meet West Nile, Deadface II and Hell Chicken.

All three figures were sculpted by Jimmy Rommel and cast by Justin Gadze, who collaborate as Ironhaus Productions/Ironhaus Productions Oz (Jimmy's based in the U.S. and Justin is in Australia). Anyone familiar with Jimmy's work should be able to recognize these gnarly monsters as his creations. As usual, the sculpts are full of character, highly detailed, and fit right in with past UoV releases. Combine that with the great care Justin obviously took in producing the figures, and you've got a release well worth picking up.

The figures are available now through the Ironhaus Oz Storenvy site. All three are sold individually in rubber, with a variety of colors offered (there are also some special variants randomly thrown into the mix, like color-changing, scented and glow-in-the-dark figures). They range from about 1.75 to 2.25 inches tall. Plus, to coincide with Wave 2, Ironhaus has re-released both Venus Maneater and Satyrant in both rubber and resin. All come in a bag with a header card along with awesome freebies such as Neclos Fortress-styled character cards, stickers and a fun UoV magnet.

Here's a closer look at each character in Wave 2:

WEST NILE

This figure has been in the making for a long time, and now it's finally seen the light of day. As you can see, it has an amazing amount of texture and detail, with the whole body being made up of what looks like exposed muscle. It's a kickass sculpt that really embodies the spirit of UoV. I also just discovered that my figure changes color when put under warm water--it goes from the orangey-red shown in the photo to a lime green. So cool.

DEADFACE II

You might remember the Deadface character from previous Universe of Violence releases. He first appeared in one of the original UoV sets from 2012. Here we have an updated version of this muscle-bound baddie with a fresh, more dynamic sculpt. My favorite part of this figure is the face--check out that creepily sadistic expression ol' spike-hand's got going on.

HELL CHICKEN

Remember Jimmy's popular Hell Turtle figure from a few years ago? Well, now we've got Hell Chicken! This seems to be the most popular figure in Wave 2, and for good reason. I mean, it's a creepy demonic chicken monster. The concept in itself is an instant win, and the sculpt does not disappoint. It doesn't necessarily scream "chicken"--the wing-arms are the most chicken-like part--but that's not really a bad thing. I like the fact that it's a monster that's somewhat chicken-like, instead of the other way around. I chose one in a neon purple color reminiscent of neon purple Monster in My Pocket figures, and I don't regret that choice. It shows off the detail really well. Mine also came in one of the scents, which smells kind of floral. I believe it's the "aphrodisiac" scent. Maybe the scent Hell Chicken emits to lure prey into its lair before attacking?

And there we have it--the latest UoV offerings from a couple of very talented guys. Again, you can pick up all three figures here.

It's good to have UoV back, don't you think?

Matutano Monstruos: vintage Spanish monster figures (revisited)

$

This post is an update on an old toy line from Spain that I originally covered a couple years ago. Back then I had only a few of these figures. I've since been able to put together a full set, so I thought it was about time to revisit these weirdly wonderful chunks of plastic with more pics and information.

To quickly recap the basics, this set consists of 20 different hard plastic monsters around 1.5 inches tall, with each sculpt produced in many colors. From what I have gathered, they came as premiums with snack foods in the late '70s and '80s in Spain and Portugal, with at least some of the figures also available in South America.

They were included with food products from a company called Matutano, which is why they're usually referred to as "Matutano Monstruos" or "Monstruos de Matutano." Other company names that are also regularly included in listings for these figures are Tito, Disvenda and Dunkin.

Here's all 20 sculpts:

It appears that some of the sculpts were inspired by creatures from existing properties. For example, the monster wearing the trench coat brings to mind the 1959 film "The Hideous Sun Demon," and the furry horned monster looks to be based off the demon in 1957's "Night of the Demon."

Thanks to a reader in Argentina, I also learned that some of the Monstruos appeared in that country not only as toys, but illustrated in comics. Specifically, they were seen in comic book supplements included with the children's magazine "Anteojito" in 1979. He provided some photos:

These are some of my favorite mini figures, mainly because of how bizarre and creative some of the sculpts are. Looking for a figure of a humanoid baby attached to a frog-like monster? You can find it here. How about a chair monster with a lamp protruding from its head and a little dude sitting in it? Check. Whoever sculpted these clearly had a lot of fun with it.

Here's some close-up shots of all the beasties:

The set has two different Cyclops. It also has two different furry guys. I'd guess the purple one is a yeti.

In my opinion, these animal-monster hybrids are three of the coolest freakazoids in the set.

Monster minis always look awesome in pink, and the Monstruos are no exception. Check out the dude on the end stretching out his ear, nose and tongue!

Three of the wackiest Monstruos. There's that amphibious baby thing I mentioned above.

A few ghoulish-yet-dapper gents smiling for the camera.

Yeah, I have no idea.

---

And there you have it -- the marvelous Monstruos de Matutano. It can be a challenge hunting down a full set of these, but it's definitely worth it. They'll instantly make any toy collection crazier and more fun.

What do you think of these little weirdos?

Russ Toys rubber 'dinosaur' mini figures

$

Started in the 1960s and named after its founder, Russ Berrie and Company released tons of toys over the years, including plush animals, troll dolls, holiday gifts and various novelties. One of its brands, just called "Russ," produced some really awesome and fun little toys in the late-1980s through the mid-1990s. For example, I can remember seeing their monster and holiday-themed rubber finger puppets all over back then, and still have several of them in my collection. In this post I'm featuring another standout Russ release -- this great set of small rubber dinosaurs!

The Russ logo on the underneath of a dino
I say "dinosaurs," but the Russ people really pushed the theme here beyond regular old historically-accurate dinosaurs. Instead, they're more like dinosaurs combined with fantasy monsters or kaiju. There's even a winged dragon thrown into the mix for some reason. Compared to the droves of other dinosaur mini figures released over the years, it really makes this set stand out. It also helps that the sculpts are well done, that they're made of a nice Monster in My Pocket-like rubber and that they come in a variety of bright, attractive colors.

So what all do we know about these figures? Here's some basics:
  • While I got some of these new in stores as a kid, I can't remember if they had a specific name or if they were just called something generic like "Dinosaurs." I believe they were sold individually from a box or tub that would have been sitting on the counter in gift, toy and novelty stores. I'd love to eventually find a photo of one of the containers.
  • I'm fairly sure they came out sometime between 1990 and 1995, but I can't say a specific year.
  • Each figure has the Russ logo on its underside, in addition to "Hong Kong." See the photo to the right for an example.
  • There are seven different sculpts I'm aware of, although I'm not positive that there weren't more than that. That's just all I own or have ever seen in my searches.
  • They range from 1 to 2 inches tall, with the creatures that stand upright being the tallest.
  • Some of the sculpts seem to have been released only in lighter colors (light purple, light blue, pink, aqua), while other dinosaurs can be found in deeper shades (darker purple, darker blue, magenta). Perhaps this means there were two different sets released at different times--I'm not sure. I also own one of the figures (the winged dragon) in glow-in-the-dark translucent green, which I got as a kid. I can't remember ever seeing another glow-in-the-dark example in my online searches. It's just a guess, but maybe glow-in-the-dark versions of these figures came out later, following the standard color releases.
A magenta winged dragon alongside my glow-in-the-dark version

Now, here's a closer look at each of these beastly beauties:

This stubby, brutish Triceratops just might be my favorite. The bumpy texture that was sculpted onto this figure is fantastic, and I love how its face looks so gnarly!

What stands out about this Brontosaurus (or whatever they're called these days) is how chunky it is compared to the other figures. It's a nice solid, thick hunk of rubber.

A winged dragon in a set of dinosaurs? Hey, why the hell not.

Like the Triceratops, this Stegosaurus also looks a lot fiercer than in most other toy depictions. Again, there's the dino-meets-kaiju thing going on.

I don't know what dinosaur this is supposed to be, but considering the other figures in the set, maybe it's not even based on an actual dinosaur. Unicornosaurus?

Here's another favorite. I think it's somewhat T-Rex inspired, but it's also Godzilla-like.

Finally, we have what I guess is a Dimetrodon. It's funny, because usually this one looks more docile, so it's sort of like they went the opposite route than with most of the other sculpts.

---

And there you have it! More excellent, colorful hunks of rubber from days gone by. Who else remembers these things? And who can shed any more light on exactly how they were released?

Wishing everyone a weirdo Christmas!

Lucky Yuckies (GeGeGe no Kitarō capsule bootleg keshi)

The covers of all 5 Lucky Yuckies booklets
In the 80s and 90s, a lot of Japanese keshi were bootlegged and sold in 25 cent capsule machines in the U.S. and other countries. One such set was released under the name Lucky Yuckies, and used figures of characters from the Japanese manga series GeGeGe no Kitarō(ゲゲゲの鬼太郎).

The Lucky Yuckies set came out in 1987, consisting of 12 different rubber mini figures and five mini booklets. The books contain bios and stories around all the characters, with the idea being that kids could make wishes on these little creatures. I assume you'd get one booklet along with each figure. There's no mention anywhere of GeGeGe no Kitarō, and all the characters were given completely different names. So as with other bootlegged capsule toys from back then, most kids probably had no idea these originated from something else.

I've come across a couple different versions of Lucky Yuckies. Some of the figures (including the full set pictured above) are made of a soft, flexible rubber -- even more rubbery than Monster in My Pocket figures. I also own a few of them in a firmer plastic that more closely matches MUSCLE figures. I'm not sure if they came out at different times, or if one variation is less common. Below, you can see that the firmer figures are a bit darker in color.

What I love most about this set is how bizarre and wacky some of the monsters are. I'm not very familiar with GeGeGe no Kitarō, but these little weirdos make me want to learn more about it. I also love the fact that the writing in the little booklets is hilariously strange (you'll see what I mean below).

Here's a closer look at all of the Yuckies along with their corresponding character bios:

SHORTY looks to be GeGeGe no Kitarō's main character, Kitarō. What totally makes this figure is the little eyeball companion (which I found out is actually his father in the GGGnK story). I'm not sure which characters all of the other Yuckies are copied from, so if you know, be sure to leave a comment! KING DEVIL looks like he should be some sort of monster leader or supreme baddie. MOUSE MAN is so cool that he can bring you friends and playmates (the booklet says so!). BETH just looks like a human little girl and is a bit too normal compared to the other figures.

PAPAW...a.k.a. old scrotum-chin. STONE MONSTER is one of the best -- love the ghoulish face on this furry fiend. INVISIBLE DEVIL is a weirdo ghost with long hair and a creepy grin...and apparently, you should make a wish on him on Sundays. HAIRY is another favorite...just love the fun texture and detail of this sculpt.

TRICKY MONSTER looks pretty demonic for something that's supposed to help make my wishes come true. Look at those eyes and that huge tongue -- creepy. FIRE DRAGON is one of the most detailed sculpts, and reminds me of a naga. WATER TURTLE seems to be a kappa. Check out that bio..."You can't ask your Water Turtle to grant you a wish if it is unreasonable." Nice of them to add that disclaimer. SLEEPY just might be my favorite Lucky Yuckie. I love how it looks like a cross between a demon and a Garbage Pail Kid.

And that's all! I have to say, Lucky Yuckies are some of my favorite vending machine toys ever. Do you remember these from back in the day? What do you think of 'em?

Charmingly cheap charms: vintage capsule toys

$

Here's a random group of mini plastic charms I've had for years. I have vivid memories of getting most of them out of a small capsule machine at a laundromat as a little kid. This would have been in the late '80s or early '90s, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had been sitting in the machine for years before that. Strangely enough, I remember the same laundromat had another vending machine that specifically offered little boxes of those long balloons that clowns use to make balloon animals at kids birthday parties. I think that's the only place I've ever seen a balloon vending machine.

Anyway, here we've got a nice little mix of dogs, hats, fish, horses, guns (maybe it seemed less weird back then for little kids to walk around wearing gun charms?), and more. Even Satan is in on the fun. I'm sure my Mom was thrilled with me getting a Satan charm out of the cheapo toy machine.

Who else remembers machines filled with these little plastic charms?

Mini toy mix-up: More cheap capsule treasures

This is an add-on post to the last one featuring a bunch of old plastic capsule toy charms. Here's an even more random group of cheap vending toys I gathered together recently. There's no rhyme or reason to the mix - it just made for a fun photo.

I believe the figures here range from the 1980s to the 2000s. I remember spending a lot of effort and quarters to get that crappy Scooby Doo pencil topper sometime in the '90s! The pink gumball machine stamper in the upper right I've had for as long as I can remember, and might not even be from a capsule machine. Has anyone ever seen one of those?
