Seres Míticos: Mythology monster minis from Mexico!

$

I recently became aware of a new set of monster mini figures called Seres Míticos, and immediately knew I needed to have them. The only problem is that they were only released in Mexico. For that reason it took a bit of extra effort, but I finally got my mitts on a set to add to the Little Weirdos horde/hoard.

What exactly is the deal with these things, you ask? Let's run through the basics:
  • Seres Míticos figures were released at the end of 2017 as giveaway premiums included in packages of Mexican snack cakes called Gansitos / Gansi Premio. These cakes are produced by a company called Marinela.
  • There are 10 different sculpts to collect, featuring creatures from well known myths and legends (especially Greek mythology). They include Gryfo (Griffin), Triton, Cerberus, Manticora (Manticore), Minotauro (Minotaur), Fauno (Faun), Fenix (Phoenix), Unicornio (Unicorn), Medusa, and Dragon.
  • Each figure comes in three different colors: bronze, silver and gold.
  • They are made of hard plastic and measure about 1.5" tall.
  • One figure is included per pack of Gansi Premio cakes. They come individually wrapped along with a small character card with artwork that depicts one of the 10 monsters (for some reason the cards don't necessarily match up to the figures they're packed with).

Seres Míticos are some of the best toy premiums I've seen in a long time. They remind me of the glory days of toy giveaways and monochromatic mini figures, particularly Monster in My Pocket (if fact, I'd be surprised if they weren't inspired by MIMP). They also remind me an awful lot of the obscure but amazing Horrors N Heroes set, in both the style of the sculpts and metallic colors used. I also love that they include creatures that haven't been included in many (if any) other sets, such as Phoenix and Faun.

Here's some additional photos to show off the figures' details:

It would be better if Minotaur and Faun didn't have bases. It seems like they still could have made them to stand without them. The only other thing I'd change would be to make them a bit larger.

Here's a comparison shot with a MIMP and Horrors N Heroes figure to show off the size differences:

Seres Míticos were a great surprise. I didn't know anything about them before I stumbled onto a photo of them that was posted on Facebook, and it was the kind of discovery that continues to fuel my collecting obsession. U.S. companies should take a hint from Mexico in this case, because toy premiums this great are pretty much nonexistent here these days. I hope they've been a big hit in Mexico so that Marinela releases a second series!

What do you think? Do you plan on hunting down a set of Seres Míticos?

Kinder Joy Surprise Jurassic World toys

$

Ferrero recently brought its popular Kinder Surprise candy/toy eggs back to the U.S. via Kinder Joy, and they debuted with some pretty unexciting toys overall. That is, until a tie in with the latest installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, brought us these awesome little dinosaurs!

The Jurassic World Kinder Joy eggs feature 8 different dino mini figures to collect, and they're not just plain old dinosaur figures -- each one has an outer shell that comes apart to reveal the dinosaur's skeleton inside! The figures all come with stat cards for the specific dinosaurs, are roughly an inch tall and made of hard plastic. The set consists of:
  • Ankylosaurus
  • Apatosaurus
  • Dimorphodon
  • Mosasaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Triceratops
  • Velociraptor
They are well made for being cheap toy giveaways -- the outer shells don't come apart until you pull them apart, and what the sculpts may lack in detail they make up for in charm. As toy premiums go, these are probably some of my favorites of recent years.

Here are some additional photos of the set:

Wee Beasties capsule toys

$

There's been some decent capsule machine toys showing up recently, including these little buggers -- Wee Beasties! Google "Wee Beasties" and you'll find a Texas-based punk rock band, but further down in the search results (much further), you'll find this mini figure set that I believe first showed up sometime in 2018.

The Beasties are billed as "cute" on their vending display card. I'm usually not a big fan of cutesy depictions of monsters, but these feature sculpts that are still pretty interesting and appealing despite their cuteness. They're worth picking up if you see them out and about, or if you choose to order them in bulk online through companies such as Geddes (which sells bags of 100 figures) or A&A Global Industries (which sells bags of 250 figures).

Below are some basics about the Wee Beasties as well as a few additional photos.
  • The set consists of 10 different sculpts that each come in 6 different colors.
  • The available colors are red, lime green, aqua, blue, indigo and purple.
  • The figures are about 1" tall.
  • They are made of a sturdy plastic that's firm but has a tiny bit of give to it (think MUSCLE).
  • They are monochromatic except for white and black painted eyes on each.
Here's shot showing each of the 6 colors:

And here's a size comparison shot with Monster in My Pocket and Cosmix figures:

And finally, to wrap up the post, another group shot of the 10 different sculpts:

Micro Mutants capsule toys

Micro Mutants is another excellent capsule machine toy offering that appeared recently. I had to track some down as soon as I laid eyes on them.

Unlike most modern-day monster toys, what's great about these is that the designs aren't cutesy or overly stylized. They are genuinely creepy, bizarre mutants.

I'm pretty sure these first appeared sometime in 2018. They can currently be ordered in bulk online through vending suppliers such as gumball.com (which offers bags of 100 and bags of 250), where the description for the set reads: "Look what just crawled out of your nightmares! With their menacing eyes and sharp teeth, these creepy creatures will leave an impression on customers of all ages...Be sure to get your hands on these micro mutants before they get their hands on you!"

See below for the lowdown on Micro Mutants, plus some more images.
  • The set consists of 8 different sculpts that each come in 6 different colors.
  • The available colors are black, purple, green, red, blue and glow in the dark translucent white. The glow white is called out specifically on the vending display card as a "Glowing Mutant," but it didn't seem any less common than the other colors in the bag of 100 I ordered.
  • The figures are about 1" tall.
  • They are made of a firm-but-flexible soft plastic / hard rubber
  • Each figure has minor painted details, mainly mouths and eyes.
Here's a close-up shot of all 8 sculpts:

Here's shot showing on of my favorite sculpts in each of the 6 colors:

And here's a size comparison shot with a MUSCLE figure:

I think the Micro Mutants are great figures with interesting sculpts, especially for being so tiny. What about you? Have you come across these little weirdos, or do you plan to track any down?

I wanted to give everyone a heads up about a Kickstarter currently going on to fund the production of a new set of mini figures pictured above, called Run-A-Mucks. There's some awesome little weirdos here, designed by various artists and sculpted by Bryan Fulk of Last Resort Toys (who is also spearheading the Kickstarter).

There's various pledge levels available to get yourself some of these figures. You can check out more information and contribute toward funding the project here!

Mythos in My Pocket

Mythos in My Pocket is a new independently-released line of mini figures based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, consisting of six figures designed by Sam Heimer and sculpted by Igor Didenko. Despite being an indie release, the figures are made out of PVC similar to a MUSCLE figure.

Series one consists of the following characters: Yog-Sothoth, Dagon, Star-Spawn, The Hound, Nyarlathotep, and H.P. Lovecraft himself.

The were initially released in the classic MUSCLE flesh/pink color, which was followed up by a multi-color release consisting of green, blue, red, orange, purple, and pink/salmon. They are sold in carded 3-packs that each contain a set assortment of characters (packs A and B, which can each be purchased alone or together).

These figures are amazing! They're some of my favorite recent additions to my collection.

You can learn more and purchase them at mythosinmypocket.com.
